Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to showcase the life, legacy and leadership of Abdul Ali Khan (1922-1996) in the educational history of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the present study the various types of leadership, skills and strategic orientations which were most characteristic of Khan's administration on the way are examined in a career in which leadership was often shared and lacking in long term visionary leadership. His greatest achievements, the leadership style in addressing institutional challenges, and the legacy he has left in the regional education landscape were among the desired outcomes. The study design used was a qualitative study and a historical approach. Semi-structured interviews with key informants who worked closely with him, had first-hand knowledge of his leadership, held academic posts or were family members, and a systematic thematic analysis of historical documents, administrative records and archival materials were used to collect primary data. Five research questions were chosen for the research. The outcomes revealed the transformational and inspirational leadership were the bases for Khan's achievements in his career. The main soft skills that enabled him to succeed included integrity, adaptability, and stakeholder empowerment in times of crisis. Besides, the results showed that his management concepts are a viable and indigenous model which can be used in the present scenario of administrative practices in KP. Ultimately, it was concluded that Khan was a mentor and influence for a cohort of educationists in the province. This study provides an education governance model that is region specific in nature that can be used to address the leadership challenges of today.
