The common link between civilization and colonialism lies in their association with efforts aimed at change and progress. Algeria faced challenges from both these dimensions. To guide the nation towards genuine progress and renaissance, Malek Bennabi played a fundamental and reality-based role. Though born in Algeria, Bennabi faced the challenges of civilization and colonialism while living away from his homeland, leading a life of struggle. In this context, Malek Bennabi authored approximately 30 books, both large and small. Most of these books were published under the series titled Mushkilat al-Hadarah (“The Problems of Civilization”). Bennabi believed that the core issue of any nation is, in essence, a civilizational issue, and no nation can overcome its problems unless it deeply understands the factors that contribute to the rise and fall of civilizations.
Bennabi also worked extensively on analyzing colonial projects and was well-versed in the tactics and strategies of colonialism. He commented on the intellectual invasion initiated by colonial powers, as well as on the conditions of colonized nations, the methods employed by colonizers, and their relationships and interactions with the indigenous populations. All his books were initially written in French, later translated into Arabic and other languages, with Bennabi personally verifying most of the translations. He was also proficient in other languages. After moving from France to Cairo, he took formal lessons in Arabic to enhance his writing skills in the language. This study provides an overview of his work.
