The Politics Of Electable(S): A Hurdle To Democracy In Pakistan

Abstract

The term electable refers to a group of politicians with their own clout who shift their loyalty with regime changes. They get their place in almost every parliament. Mainstream political parties need them to form government. This research explores the nature of electable(s) and the impact of the politics of electable(s) on democracy in Pakistan. Both primary as well as secondary data have been analyzed through thematic analysis. The study has found that Electable(s) are influential and experienced politicians who have a strong family background and money. Electable(s) are status quo-oriented politicians who cause stagnation in democracy. The politics of electable(s) is not based on any ideology. It is based on the self-interest of electable(s). Electability can also be discouraged by introducing a proportional representative system in Pakistan, which means people will not vote for a candidate, but they will vote for a party.
