Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of the Battle of Hunayn as described in Bayan al-Qur’an by Dr. Israr Ahmad and Sirat Ibn Hisham, one of the earliest and most authoritative sources of Prophetic biography. The Battle of Hunayn, fought in Shawwal 8 AH shortly after the conquest of Makkah, occupies a significant position in Islamic history due to its military, spiritual, and pedagogical dimensions. The research aims to examine how both sources portray the causes, events, and outcomes of the battle and to identify areas of convergence and divergence in their narratives.

The study finds that both works agree on the essential historical framework of the event, including its timing, the participation of the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif, the numerical strength of the Muslim army, the initial setback experienced by the Muslims, and their eventual victory through divine assistance. However, the two sources differ in methodology and emphasis. Dr. Israr Ahmad approaches the event primarily through a Qur’anic lens, highlighting lessons related to faith, reliance upon Allah, moral discipline, and the dangers of overconfidence in material strength. In contrast, Ibn Hisham provides a detailed historical account, documenting military preparations, strategic developments, key personalities, and subsequent events associated with the campaign.

The comparative study demonstrates that these two sources complement one another in understanding the Battle of Hunayn. While Bayan al-Qur’an illuminates its theological and educational significance, Sirat Ibn Hisham enriches the historical narrative with extensive detail. Together, they offer a comprehensive understanding of Hunayn as a defining moment that underscores prophetic leadership, steadfastness, and the centrality of divine support in achieving success.
