Abstract

Proverbs are among the oldest forms of expression in both the Arabic and Pashto languages, as they convey the experiences and wisdom of nations in a concise and meaningful way. In Arabic culture, proverbs hold a distinguished status, as evidenced by their presence in the Holy Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), for they firmly establish meanings and clarify purposes in an eloquent and effective manner. Similarly, in the Pashto language, there are proverbs that express the same ideas found in Arabic proverbs, using comparable expressions that promote patience, generosity, justice, and piety. This reflects the unity of human experience and the similarity of moral thought among peoples despite linguistic differences. This short article presents a brief selection of Arabic proverbs alongside their counterparts in the Pashto language.
